Overview
This FAQ provides general information for our direct hotel partners regarding occupancy taxes and is not intended to provide tax advice. Hotels remain responsible for complying with their tax obligations, including informing HotelTonight of applicable tax rates (for any taxes not collected and remitted by us), ensuring such tax rates are accurate and up-to-date, and timely remitting taxes they owe to the proper taxing authorities. If you have specific questions about your tax obligations under applicable laws and regulations, we recommend conducting independent research and/or consulting a tax professional.
In some jurisdictions, HotelTonight collects and remits occupancy taxes on behalf of hotels and/or on our service fee. We automatically calculate these taxes and collect them from guests at the time of booking, and then remit them to the applicable tax authority.
When we automate this process, it doesn’t change which taxes are due or the total payout you receive as a hotel. You’ll continue to receive your payout minus our service fee.
View taxes collected on your behalf
If your hotel is located in an area where HotelTonight collects and remits some or all of the taxes on the net room rate on your behalf, these taxes will be shown on your HT Extranet profile under Profile → Settings → Tax/Fees → Tax Remitted by HotelTonight.
If you believe applicable laws exempt your hotel from collecting a tax that HotelTonight collects and remits on your behalf, please notify us by contacting hotelhelp@hoteltonight.com. Otherwise, you waive that exemption by accepting the reservation.
If you do not see the Tax Remitted by HotelTonight section in your profile, it means your property is not located in an area where HotelTonight collects and remits taxes on behalf of hotels.
Calculating applicable taxes
Our system determines which taxes apply based on the address entered by the hotel partner. Please check the details on the Profile page of the hotel’s HT Extranet account to make sure your property’s address is correctly entered.
I use HTX to list my hotel on Airbnb. What about applicable taxes on Airbnb?
If you are a hotel that's listing on Airbnb using HTX, the tax treatment will be the same as it is on HotelTonight. Similar to how it works on HotelTonight, the Airbnb system determines which taxes apply based on the address entered by the hotel partner. Airbnb automatically calculates these taxes and collects them from guests at the time of booking. In some jurisdictions, Airbnb also remits occupancy taxes directly to the tax authority. You are responsible for any applicable taxes that are not collected by Airbnb, and are also responsible for paying any occupancy taxes that Airbnb does not remit on your behalf.
Other tax obligations
Even if HotelTonight automatically collects and pays certain occupancy taxes on your hotel’s behalf, you may still be required to manually collect other occupancy taxes. You are responsible for knowing whether or not HotelTonight is collecting any taxes on your behalf.
For example, HotelTonight may collect state taxes but not local ones in some places. If your hotel is located in an area where HotelTonight collects the tax only on the our service fee, you remain responsible for collecting and remitting the appropriate tax on your room rate (net of our service fee).
Hotels remain responsible for assessing and complying with all other applicable tax obligations (including any additional city or local requirements). We recommend doing some research to make sure you understand and comply with any local tax rules and obligations that apply to your listing. Check with your local government or a tax professional for additional information about taxes that apply to your situation.
